Normally, the ocean freight bill entails many additional charges.  All of which are stated in varying units of measure.  Below are just a few of the units of measure used by the industry.  It is our job to translate these units of measure into a number you can relate too.

Charges by the port for use of their facilities.

 

  • Handling — Quoted in $/100 lbs or $/2000 lbs.

Charges by a company to unload or load your product.

 

  • Fuel Bunker — Quoted in $/metric ton or $/cubic meter.

Charges by the steamship line to off set rapidly increasing fuel expenses.

 

  • Currency Adjustment Bunker — Quoted in $/metric ton or $/cubic meter.

Charges by the steamship line to off set a weak US dollar.

 

  • Harbor Maintenance Fees — Quoted in $/100 of FOB dock value.

Charges by the U.S. government to maintain U.S. ports facilities.

 

  • C.I.F. — Quotations depend on industry standard.

Stands for Cargo, Insurance and Freight.

 

  • Free OutYour customer pays to have the vessel discharged.

 

  • Liner terms This means the steamship line will offer you a rate which includes both loading the vessel and discharging the vessel.
